La Prima Opera is Australia's newest and most exciting concert opera company. Our mission is to present opera of the highest possible quality to the broadest audience imaginable, providing another forum for Melbourne's elite opera singers to perform.
La Prima Opera premiered their hugely successful "Opera Show" to audiences varying from aficionado to first time opera goers in 2009. The "Opera Show" was written by Philip Wheeldon, directed by Hugh Halliday, narrated by Chris McKenna and featured Pianist Len Vorster, Soprano Alison Rae Jones, Mezzo Jacqui Dark, Tenor Roy Best and Baritone Phillip Calcagno. With guest artists, Soprano Cheryl Darvidis and Bass Baritone Paul Hughes.
La Prima Opera put the fun back into this 400-year-plus tradition - With all the allure of romance, love, betrayal and murder, the program was compiled of best-loved highlights and show stopping numbers from opera. Australia's stars of opera performed famous pieces from The Marriage of Figaro, La Boheme, Don Giovanni, La Traviata, Lakme, The Pearl Fishers, Carmen, Rigoletto and much more...oh, and of course the most famous aria - Nessun Dorma. Everything was set for a different kind of opera experience; accessible, appealing, intimate and unique!
In 2010, La Prima Opera were thrilled to be recipients of a Touring Victoria Grant from Arts Victoria and tour their new show "OVATION" nationally to 20 theatres from Sale to Portland and beyond.
"OVATION" is targeted at non traditional opera audiences. It's a fully directed show of hits and highlights of opera. Fun, entertaining and the perfect introduction to opera for gen y, gen x, the Jones', baby boomers and seniors alike.
